As editor of your Murray Newsletter, I anxiously scan my emails each week for a fun story to include. Receiving and posting fliers for upcoming events is part of what I do, but when I see an unexpected note that pertains to Murray or our area's history, it's especially interesting.
Do you ever wonder how our streets got their names? As you drive along Highway 1, (Main Street), going east through Murray, 'Loughridge' is the northbound road that passes alongside Murray Building and Supply. Now a 'door' has opened as to the naming of this street.

The photos shown are from his family history book. After thanking Stephen for this fun information, I opened another email saying that we now have another subscriber to the Newsletter..wa-a-a-y over in Great Britain!

I have been reading a book of our family history (written in 1943) regarding a relative (William Loughridge) who was one of the early inhabitants of Murray and the visit of his nephew Matthew to Murray in 1907 (including early photos). I have attached the relevant pages in case they are of interest.

This is an open invitation to you, your children, or to your group's organization to be a part of this year's FREEDOM FESTIVAL parade on July 4th in Murray!
Drive your go-cart, antique tractor, motorcycle, new or classic car, or ride your new bike or even a unicycle. If you want to walk on stilts as 'Uncle Sam', do cartwheels down the parade route, show off your martial arts skills, or bring your uniformed baseball, softball or soccer team, come on over to Murray and get in line for the parade. Get your friends at youth or church group to help decorate a truck or flatbed, then pile on the float and get in line!
NO pre-registration required, just show up and get in line. There is no cost to participate. Parade line-up begins at 6 p.m. with emergency vehicles, (police, fire and rescue), starting at Railroad Avenue, south of Young street. All other entries are to line up at the east parking lot of Conestoga Elementary School, 104 East High Street, Murray, NE. From the school, entrants will go one block east, to the grain elevator, falling in behind the emergency vehicles, turning west on Young Street and ending at Young Memorial Park. The route is about 8-9 blocks long.

CASA RECRUITMENT BEGINS
Cass Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is currently recruiting CASA advocates to speak up for the best interest of abused and neglected children in Cass County.
The next training session is scheduled to begin July 24 and will run for five weeks. The training consists of 15 hours of online training and 15 hours of in-person training.
We are also seeking male volunteers for this class as over 60% of our CASA children are males.

GRAND MARSHAL
The Freedom Festival is seeking nominations for 'Grand Marshal' for this year's 4th of July event.
The Grand Marshal nominee should be someone who has had a positive influence in and around the surrounding area, not just in Murray. Whether by his/her volunteerism, patriotism or general contribution to society, this person could be a co-worker, teacher, good neighbor, or just a kind-hearted friend who helps to make our part of the world a better place in which to live.
Nominees will be considered at a meeting in June, (date to be decided), of the Freedom Festival. The public will have the opportunity to vote for this year's Grand Marshal at that time. The nominee with the most votes will then be notified and will be asked to honor the festival by leading the parade on the 4th.
If you would like to submit someone's name for consideration, please send their name and contact information along with a summary of their qualifications to: Freedom Festival, RE: Grand Marshal, P.O. Box 244, Murray, NE 68409. You must include your own name and contact information.
Entries must be received no later than June 20, 2016.

Entries for the 14th Annual Nebraska American String Teachers Fiddle Tune Composition Contest were received from Colorado (Aurora, Louisville, Monument), Maryland (Accokeek), Nebraska (Bellevue, Lincoln), Ohio (Bowling Green), Virginia (Arlington), Washington (Olympia), Wyoming (Cheyenne), Canada (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia)

“Leading Ladies” Laugh Riot at Lofte!
The Lofte Community Theatre will be opening the hilarious comedy, “Leading Ladies” on Friday, June 3 at 7:30pm. Written by Ken Ludwig, this is the story of two down-and-out Shakespearean actors in the 1950s. They come up with the idea to run a con on an aging heiress and pose as her two long-lost relatives. However, they quickly learn that the con must be pulled off as women! This high-energy farce and fast-paced confusion will keep you in stitches.
Starring as the two Shakespearean con artists are Joshua P. Smith of Omaha and Scott Seelhoff of Fremont. Also in the production are Brenna Thompson of Lincoln, Kevin Holdorf of Manley, Dan Sedlacek of Papillion, Alexandra Suslow-Geditz of Omaha, and Casey Wagner and Shakeida Bullis both of Bellevue. The show is directed by Kevin Colbert of Weeping Water.
Production dates for the show are June 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11 and 12. Curtain times are 7:30pm Thursday through Saturdays. All Sunday performances are 2pm matinees. Tickets are $19 and can be reserved by calling the Lofte box office at 402-234-2553. The Lofte Community Theatre is located just east of the town of Manley in Cass County.

Registration is now open for the 2016 Schoolhouse Fiddle Camps, in the Old Avoca Schoolhouse, in Avoca, Nebraska. Deborah Greenblatt, championship fiddler, author of many fiddle collections, will help the campers get in touch with their inner fiddler. The course of study during the Schoolhouse Fiddle Camps will be designed specifically for the individual campers who sign up.
The June Camp (Monday, June 13 - Friday, June 17) is for folks who consider themselves beginners. The July Camp (Monday, July 11 - Friday, July 15) is for folks who consider themselves intermediate or advanced. Enrollment is limited to 10 fiddlers for each week, so that everyone will get individual attention.

Experience Works is a national, non-profit organization funded by the US Dept of Labor to administer the Senior Community Service Employment Program, which assists people 55 and older in getting updated training to assist in returning to the workforce. This is a federally funded program and offers a no-cost employment service to older adults who qualify. Once accepted into the program, individuals are placed in a training site in or near their community, where they gain on the job experience while working 20-21 hours/week at $8/hour. We also help with skill assessments, computer training, resumes, cover letters, job search, etc. The goal is that through the training and job search assistance we gain help older adults gain good jobs in or around their communities.
